Howdy! M40 & 30F from San Francisco/NYC visiting Japan mid November through December. We fly in and out of Tokyo, but really loose in terms where we'd go within Japan. We're open to any part of the country, really. It's not out of the question to rent a car, or fly either.
Far less interested in the more obvious tourist destinations and really more so interested in connecting to the culture while there. Most of what we're looking for is specific to the arts, and curious if anyone is savvy enough to suggest a few activities, experiences, events, resources, organizations, or otherwise. Maybe even just a website you know of that's introduced you to your favorite stuff would be helpful as we're going in blind and as first-timers.
(Thanks in advance for bearing through the following uber-hipster uppity list of two smug nerds…)
Looking for: Modern dance (or ballet), dance music, experimental music, psyche-rock, illustration, audio/visual tech experiences, synthesizers & musical instruments, thrift stores, performance art, cirque shows, theatre, printmaking workshops/exhibits, your favorite museum, nightclub, folk art/music, open mics, speakeasies, independent sake/brewmasters, weird bars, favorite buskers, roadtrips to charming little towns, artist collectives, puppet shows. Retro video games & RPGs are also up there, but I imagine there's plenty of that readily accessible. Obviously, all the foods.
Would super appreciate if anything comes to mind that you could recommend!
