  1. I find it hard to believe that almost 1/4 of non-drinkers don’t drink alcohol ONLY because they don’t like the taste… there has to be another reason with that, right?

I get not liking the taste, but there’s just so many different options that it feels strange that so many people hate it all.

  2. If you’re working all hours for pittance, you a) can’t be drinking at work so time to do it, and b) alcohol is a non essential thus people don’t buy it.

I also think the way younger people relax at home likely no longer involves alcohol and TV, but more gaming, which being drunk impairs.

I also know several young work colleagues say they don’t drink so they don’t have to go out with the boss……

  3. I saw this in another thread on the same topic, but I thought it was in touch enough to share here.

I think while on the surface this looks good. Less drinking, is an objectively healthier thing, I worry if we’re looking at a symptom of a bigger problem. A symptom that manifests itself as less drinking. Less sociability. Part of me suspects it’s because gen Z is stressed the hell out and lacks even the energy to go out and drink.

  4. I don’t like drinking because I get heart palpitations, so I’m glad this nomunication thing is dying off.
I’m also glad that non-alcoholic beer is now everywhere and I drink that instead.

  5. Alcohol gives you an alternate perspective and helps you think different

So it is wasted on those who don’t think much

  6. Alcohols social benefits…lol…sounds like a marketing campaign by companies that produce alcoholic drinks.

  7. Question… aren’t there any other ways to socialize without having to drink alcohol? I mean, I see car meetups, photography meetups, even just get-togethers between friends that doesn’t even involve drinking alcohol, even in Japan. The ones I see doing these, and even participated in, are all working adults, where drinking’s like… not even in the discussion immediately.

  8. I wonder if it’s related to Covid lockdowns. Anecdotal but I see the this year’s college grads drink more than the last 4 years of graduates.

Drinking isn’t great for culture, but I’ve noticed new grads have noticeable differences in social awareness and communication skills.

  9. I always find these articles interesting. Cause certain places I’ve been to in Tokyo and Osaka, I see a lot of Gen Z drinking. Sometimes more than their elders.

I will admit I haven’t read this article yet. But I always wonder where they get this data from and if that might skew results.

  10. Nominication wa hitsyou nai!

That’s a good thing, to see less and less people drinking and falling asleep on the streets

  11. How credible is this when they only asked 300 people?

My family has 3 Gen Z members. One of the doesn’t drink at all, the two others do. Is that more representative?

By the way, the non-drinking one is extremely social and has no problems finding friends, both in cyberspace and real life.

  12. Its a drug that kills millions every year. Just because people have been brainwashed by the culture and media doesn’t change the fact that it is basically poison. you can literally overdose and die if you drink too much alcohol just like meth, heroin, ecstasy or fentynal.

    Except cannabis though…

  13. I mean they say that and then are on their phones constantly and are incredibly socially awkward and generally unhealthy emotionally.  It’s a terrible trade off imho

  14. I mean it’s expensive and I feel like shit the day after, not many benefits to drinking other than the in the moment fun.

  15. alcohol for social benefits? I thought alcohol was just the depression treatment for having to go to the office…
