My supervisor punched me and I told HR – did I make a mountain out of a molehill?

Basically I work at an all Japanese company as the only foreigner. Even though I’ve taken up the actual job duties quickly and my level of Japanese is fine, there’s still times my brain lags behind the situation.

Last week when the boss was giving an announcement to the office, I got confused and thought he was talking to just my supervisor, so I was just continuing looking at my reports.

Well I was right next to my supervisor and he didn’t like that I was ignoring the boss so he punched me in the arm and whispered 話聞けよ。当たり前だろ!

So I told hr, hey I’m not seeking punitive action or anything, it’s not like I’m injured, but I just want to put it on the record what happened. In case it happens frequently or worse next time. But they just ended up talking to my supervisor and he said he just wanted to get my attention but he was wrong so he will issue an apology with me and the boss together.

I half guessed that would be the result but I’m kind of wondering if I should have just talked to my supervisor directly or will my office life be awkward for the rest of my time here? I didn’t really want to make our relationship worse than it already was as the office is quite small. Luckily he is on business trips 90% of the time but still.
