On a 1-year work visa since 12/29/2024, working for a small 'atelier' design firm in Tokyo. My boss told me a couple weeks ago that he wasn't satisfied with my work (もっと頑張ってほしい、等など). I asked him to provide me with specific ways in which I can improve. Cut to this week, he said he couldn't think of anything specific. The conversation goes downhill from there and it sounds like I'm getting fired. But it turns out he wants me to stay until the end of my visa (and 1-year contract) or until they hire someone new. The original plan was that I would be working through May 2026. It's a toxic work environment by my American standards, so I never saw it as a long term workplace. What would you do? I kinda want to quit now, I can't imagine getting a good letter of recommendation at this point.
