Phone plan in tokyo

Help! I am moving to japan this tuesday on the 16th from USA. I have not been thinking about a phone plan until just now. i am studying abroad for a year. September -September

I am planning to use my AT&T international day plan for a day or two until i can go get a phone plan and then suspend my USA number.

I do not know if this is gonna work, I do not speak Japanese at all. I will be living in Nakano in tokyo, is there an unlimited data plan I can get while i’m there or something similar. what company should I use? How quickly can i set this up?

Kinda freaking out and annoyed at myself for not researching this.

  1. Transfer your US number right now today to some free service like Google Voice so you can keep it and sometimes use it. Look up Google Voice alternatives too since some two factor authentication doesn’t support GV.

I use Rakuten. Service is fine in Tokyo. Cheap AF compared to US. Unlimited data for less than $25 a month depending on exchange rate. If you use less than a certain amount in a month, there are two lower data pricing tiers that you’ll automatically be charged at, win win. Walk into any Rakuten store with your residence card and you’ll get set up. Calls cost money, unless you use their app to call out, but you probably won’t be making many calls anyway. I think texts cost money too, but everyone uses LINE here instead.
