Ok maybe I’m not understanding something but everytime I read or talk to people about “how to move to Okinawa” everyone’s like “it’s so easy, u can just get a job at Taco Bell on base and boom you can stay in Oki”
All the jobs on the gov cites are spousal/local hires/on island only. So why do people act like this is an option to get SOFA status? I’ve seen it on countless posts and even on different platforms. Am I missing something?

The military is a bubble, and most of the people leaving those comments haven’t ever attempted to get a Japanese visa.
Priority goes to disabled vets, vets, and dependants. Even then it’s not guarenteed.
It’s really competitive because it’s an easier way to stay in Japan with a higher salary. A hiring manager told me they got flooded with applicants after a job announcement was posted. They closed it after a few days. The majority were overqualified for the position.
