Japan’s Economic Revitalization Minister Ryosei Akazawa said he will visit the US from Aug. 28–30 for tariff talks.
He plans to push for a quick reduction of US auto tariffs and adjustments to other duties.
The US wants a written agreement to secure Japan’s promised $550 billion (about ¥81 trillion) in US investments and loans.
Until now, Japan had resisted making such a document, but it is now willing to agree if it helps secure early tariff cuts. Both countries are expected to sign the deal once finalized.
