I’ve been living in a pretty standard ~25m² apartment in Tokyo. Last year I was freelancing on the side, but this year I switched to full-time freelancing.
The problem is that my current place is small, and my living and working spaces are completely tangled together. It’s getting harder to separate work and personal life.
So, I’m considering moving mainly to get a larger space where I can properly set up a home office.
My question is: if the reason for moving is specifically to secure more office/workspace, can I count moving-related costs as business expenses?
I know that 敷金 (deposit) can’t be expensed since it’s refundable, but what about:
- 礼金
- Broker fees
- Moving company costs
- Other initial expenses when moving
For context, the current apartment has affordable rent, I’ve only lived here for about three years, and I wasn’t planning to move unless the rent increased, but the main reason is the need for a bigger workspace.
Would this count as a justifiable business expense if the move is clearly for work purposes?
Any insights or experiences would be really appreciated
Thanks in advance!
