Anyone else stop paying for school lunch due to rising costs?

I'm wondering if any other teachers are adapting to the high inflation when it comes to school lunch. I certainly had to. I'm gonna miss curry and rice days.

  1. Yes, I stopped before Christmas when the price went up quite a bit. I’ve been saving to move back to the UK, so it’s been home-made onigiri and miso soup for me! Not bad, but I miss curry days too.

  2. My school has paid lunch delivery for teachers (¥500/day), or we can buy from the cafeteria. I usually opt for packing my own lunch. Leftovers or a cup noodle are my go-tos for savings.

  3. How much is your school lunch?!
Mine is 4900円 per month, divided by the average of 21 working days is about 230円 per meal. I can scarcely imagine less expensive food of comparable quality and caloric/nutritional content. Like sure, you could get a 50円 100ml cup ramen for lunch, but at that point you’re gonna die from malnutrition…

  4. No from 6000yen last year, this year is about 7000yen for a month. I can`t stop, the rice is too expensive and rice is my staple food. Plus all the gas bills going high, all food prices too. Ahh! Our school lunch have so much rice too so I eat half for lunch and the rest I take it home and eat it for dinner.

  5. Surely you’re not saving THAT much money by skipping the school lunch, right?

  6. You brought up a good question OP. I might quit. I noticed the lunches last month were 7,000 yen. I don’t know if it would be any better if I packed though. I tend to cook and eat healthy. That costs money and time.

The school lunches are decent but mostly it’s carbs and very little protein and vegetables.

  7. Damn… you guys are paying 5-6k for school lunch? Mine is ¥8,250 per month (or about ¥400 per day), and I thought that was dirt cheap :/

  8. OP next post: Evil dispatch company is deducting money from my salary because I have taken multiple sick days due to nutritional deficiencies.

  9. Sub 300 yen a day is totally worth i have no idea why you stop taking school lunches

  10. Quit the school lunch. Thats shit is awful. Ditch the salty sugary carb heavy processed garbage and use the money to make your own healthy lunch boxes.

  11. I’m now pondering it. It’s mostly bland crap. Day in & out. Paying even MORE for this dull swill is niggling me, I must confess.

Today they served up ‘chow hun’. Inedible. Binned it.

Easily as sugar soaked as Sakura mochi.

They have two flavours where I work : sweet & sweeter than last time.

  12. Mine used to be 300 yen, but are now about 350 due to inflation. It beats making my own lunch, so it doesn’t make much difference to me.

Are everyone’s lunches really such bad, overly sweetened crap? I don’t like drinking milk, so I can’t speak about that, but the meals I have consist of rice, soup, some kind of “main” element that’s often fish, and some kind of pickled vegetables. I used to not like veggies and fish, but I like these ones.

Maybe I’m just really lucky, or oblivious, or maybe it’s the bias towards complaints on online forums. But there’s not much that could stop me from getting lunch at school.

  13. Depends on the town/city and school. My most recent lunch fee was ¥4302 for a month. I believe it’s prorated based on the days you attend school in the month. So nowadays it’s around ¥4500-5000 I suppose
. And that’s on the higher end, prices just increased recently. Onky a few years ago I was paying no more than ¥2900-3500 per month. There’s actually no other way I can beat that besides just fasting for lunch.

  14. i’ve opted out of milk for the past 5 years now, saving 800yen a month. Around 6 or 7 of us don’t have milk here at school, there’s enough calories in a JHS school lunch as it is

  15. With the increase in utility costs and groceries in Japan, I find school lunch to be better value in terms of time and money. A piece of salmon at my local supermarket costs 200 yen or more. And I need some salad, soup or side dishes in my lunch as well. So cooking is sometimes more expensive than the school lunch, and can average 400 yen a day if I eat a lot of protein and vegetables. Chicken breast is cheap, but I don’t want to eat that for lunch every day.

I live in the 23 wards of Tokyo, so the supermarkets are not the cheapest but not the most expensive. I have Life, Tokyu Store, Maruetsu etc. As for utilities, my apartment has City gas which is cheaper than LPG, but the price has increased. So for me, school lunch at 400 yen might not be so bad.

  16. I don’t have school lunches, but I’ve been in a sandwich eating mode recently. Just make a ham sandwich. Then prepare tomatoes and lettuce, soon to be avocado and just add them to my sandwich at school. Everyone is fascinated watching me prepare a fresh looking sandwich.

  17. Uni here, but I’m pretty much stuck with buying whatever lunches I can get because I’m too time-poor and energy-deficient to make my own.

  18. Mine is 7,000 a month. I’m so close to stopping. But I hate cooking so school lunch is probably the most balanced meal I get.

  19. I never get school lunch. I make my own bento the night before. I am not saving, nor spending significantly more per month than I would be on school lunches, but I like being able to choose what I eat each day. I have a nice bento, so I bring rice, miso soup, a small entree, a vegetable, and usually I make shiraae. That, a Greek yogurt, and a cheap protein bar for a snack at the end of the school day, and I am only spending slightly more buying in bulk than I would be on school lunches. Now, the time I spend going to five different shops to get everything as cheap as I can, that is an annoying investment, but that’s also when I get my steps in.

  20. I get that some people want to save money, but I personally won’t risk my health just to cut a small amount from my monthly lunch fee. The school lunch here is actually well-balanced and pretty nutritious. Sure, you could try to save a bit by skipping it or cutting corners, but is it really worth it? In the long run, your body’s going to feel the effects if you keep missing out on proper meals.

  21. My school lunch has been about 400 per lunch since I started at my school about 20 years ago. It’s cheaper thank McDonald’s or konbini, and I don’t have to go anywhere. Although, to be honest, since kimura-bread also sells at my school, I eat too much bread now.

  22. You can skip lunch and go for an intermittent fast diet as well, if you’re able to adjust it’s great.

I recommend taking glucomannan supplements until your stomach adjust to the diet.

It’s a great way to keep both your weight and your wallet in shape.

  23. I’ve thought about bringing my own lunch but its still a good deal. Just not happy with how much it rose so fast. 2 years ago I was paying 36-3900. Last year it went up to 5300 and this year its at 6000. Im allergic to shrimp and tomatoes. So some days I only get a bowl of rice and soup or rice and meat.

  24. Mine is 5900 a month. I only worked high school before with no school lunch and easily spent 12000 a month. It averages under 400 yen a day and the food quite frankly is really high quality. I think in general I’m paid so low every expense seems large but I’m grateful for school lunch.

  25. I prefer to cook bento every morning, the provided bento at work or school for children looks disgusting, I’m no saying it’s bad but nothing better than self cooked meal.
