TL;DR Two teenagers were arrested at Fukuoka Airport for smuggling 14 kilograms of liquid containing THC, a psychoactive component of cannabis, from Thailand. This marks the first time Japanese juveniles have been apprehended for smuggling by plane since 2000.

At least this time it’s actually a lot and not something like 1 mdma pill that makes it to the news.
How severe are the consequences for getting caught with cannabis in Japan in general?
Geez. With that amount you can probably assume they were gonna sell it. Considering I saw a small vial with liquid sold for 40k yen, this would set them up for life lol
Definitely not worth the risk, boys and girls. Don’t get any funny ideas.
I thought they got caught with like a gram of honey oil.
14kg, lol.
Well well well! And they say “Foreigners are the problem!”
14kg, good grief!
I wonder if these kids were hired to try to sneak this in the country. My wife is a schoolteacher and she says teens have little to no interest in Thailand as a destination to travel to.
Meanwhile alcohol flows like the sumida river
14kg of liquid THC is about 14 liters. I spent some time trying to figure out how much volume this would be and wanted to compare to a gallon of water then thought I should express this in liters and guess what…- a liter of water famously weighs one kg.
Anyway I’m an idiot but FWIW 1 liter of pure THC oil usually weighs 960-1050 grams.
Here I was thinking they were busted for carrying a cart when it turns out they were lugging what may as well be a gallon of PCP this whole time
As reasonable as it is to enforce the laws as written, this is one of those cases where I imagine that whatever punishment the Japanese legal system cooks up will be much more objectively harmful than any amount of THC.
These kids are obviously responsible for their own poor decisions, but I also strongly believe that nobody should be jailed or ostracized for possession of a “drug” that is less dangerous than alcohol. (All you have to do is imagine if whiskey was illegal, for example…) It’s a stupid reason to ruin a life, on both sides of the equation.
Curious how the police is gonna prosecute since they’re minors.
