Japan Post announced on the 22nd that it will temporarily stop accepting some types of mail to the United States from the 27th of this month. This suspension specifically affects parcels and other items containing goods. This decision comes in response to the U.S. government’s plan under the Trump administration to end tax exemptions on mail worth less than $800 starting August 29. However, Japan Post will continue to accept letters, postcards, and printed materials for shipment to the U.S.
Japan Post decided to halt the acceptance of parcels subject to the new taxation due to uncertainties about the taxation procedures. This measure is reportedly being adopted by other international postal service providers as well.
