Itinerary help: 4 days open after Tsumago (honeymoon in October)

Hi all,

I’m going to Japan in October for my honeymoon (about 2.5 weeks). I’ve got most of my itinerary planned, but I’m stuck on one section and would love some advice.

So far, the plan looks like this:

  • Land in Tokyo → spend a couple of days there
  • Head to Hirayu Onsen as a base to hike around Kamikochi for a few days
  • Down to Takayama for a couple of days
  • Drive to walk the Magome–Tsumago trail

After that, I’ve got about 4 days open before ending the trip in Kyoto (then back to Tokyo to fly out). We’ll have a car for this part, so we’re not limited to train routes.

Originally, I was thinking of driving around the Kii Peninsula: seeing Nachi waterfall, some coastal/nature spots, and stopping by Mount Koya before reaching Kyoto. But the more I look into it, the Kii Peninsula maybe seems a little underwhelming? I’m wondering if it’s worth the long drive.

Other ideas I’ve had:

  • Izu Peninsula
  • Exploring north of Kyoto
  • Staying longer in the Japanese Alps instead

So my question is: What would you recommend for those 4 days after Tsumago? Should I stick with Kii, or would another region be a better use of the time?

Thanks in advance!
