China tells Japan convicted man rewarded by intelligence agency

TL;DR China informed Japanese businesses that an Astellas Pharma employee convicted of spying received rewards from a Japanese intelligence agency. The briefing aimed to reassure Japanese companies operating in China. Since China's counterespionage law first came into force in 2014, 17 Japanese citizens, including the Astellas employee, have been detained for alleged spying. Five are still in China, according to the Japanese government.
