
A decomposing body was found on Mount Asahi in Higashikawa, Hokkaido, on Saturday, according to the Asahikawa-Higashi Police Department.
A hiker reported the body to police around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. A mountain rescue team recovered the body around 7 p.m. on Friday, and the person was pronounced dead.
The body was partially decayed. The police said the person was wearing clothes and snowshoes, but had no identification.
The remains were found on a slope in the Jigokudani, or “Hell Valley,” area of the mountain, a location known for toxic gases. Police are investigating the death as a possible accident or crime. The person's age and gender are unknown.
