A 49-year-old woman from Hyogo Prefecture fell approximately 100 meters off Mount Yari in the Northern Alps, breaking her hip

On the morning of August 23, a 49-year-old woman from Hyogo Prefecture fell while climbing Mt. Yarigatake in the Northern Alps and was seriously injured.

The woman, a part-time worker from Amagasaki, had entered the mountains from Kamikochi on August 22 with one companion. The pair attempted the ascent via the North Ridge, a steep and technical route, when she slipped and fell about 100 meters around 8:30 a.m.

Her partner called for help, and a Nagano prefectural police helicopter rescued her around 10:30 a.m. She was flown to a hospital in Matsumoto, where doctors found she had broken her pelvis and suffered other serious injuries.

The North Ridge of Yarigatake is considered a “variation route” suitable only for highly experienced climbers. Narrow ridges and sheer rock faces make it dangerous, and several falls have already occurred there this year.
