With 2025 marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, fewer and fewer people who experienced the war are still with us. War museums and archives, which display artifacts and personal belongings from the war, play a crucial role in passing on the memories and lessons of that time. However, a recent survey by a citizens' group found that over half of these facilities are facing operational and financial challenges.
The survey was conducted this year by the "Museums for Peace Citizens Network," a civic organization comprised of museum professionals and researchers. They targeted 219 museums and war archives across the country and received responses from 72 facilities (56 public, 16 private), which is just over 30% of those surveyed.
Over 50% Face Operational Concerns
When asked about their operational stability, more than half of the facilities combined expressed concern. This issue was particularly pronounced among private institutions, with 15 out of 16 reporting that they are facing operational challenges.
