On June 18, the Kyoto Prefectural Police arrested a 36-year-old Chinese national, who manages a company in Osaka's Sumiyoshi Ward, on suspicion of attempted murder. The man, who had already been indicted for violating the Immigration Control and Refugee Act, is accused of stabbing a 37-year-old Chinese tourist in the chest multiple times with a box cutter-like blade on a street in Kyoto's Shimogyo Ward around 8:05 p.m. on June 6. The victim was part of a tour group.

According to the police, the suspect was distributing flyers for a travel company when he got into an argument with someone in the tourist's group. The tourist intervened, and the suspect suddenly attacked him before fleeing the scene. The tourist's injuries were not life-threatening.

The police identified the suspect from security camera footage and arrested him on June 19 on charges of illegal stay in Japan. When questioned by police, the suspect stated, "I have nothing to say at this time."
