Tokyo in 3 Decades

I know tourist photo dumps aren't loved here and please delete this if it is unwanted.

However this is not meant as a photo dump but it so happened that I visited 3 times and wanted to show specific images of the same places. (Though sadly I wasn't clever enough to always take the exact same image)

I am only posting this here, because I would love to see this about my home town (Hamburg, GER)

I also wanted to jot down the changes I – as a guest – noticed in the city.

For one the obvious: While in 2008 I often was the only westerner around for hours and sometimes what felt like days, Tokyo now definitely has it's fair share of tourists from all around the world.

I also remember the city to be greener? Maybe that is my rose tinted glasses of my first trip…)

As a foreigner who barely can say hello, thank you, sorry and maybe 10 other words it has become a lot easier… And while on my first trip I ran into more than one bar that didn't allow me in (politely and I assume mostly because they had no way of translating or potentially dealing with a foreign debit card) this time around I was welcome everywhere and thanks to feet, hand, broken japanese, some english and a ton of online translaters even had some lovely chats with bar owners and other patrons (obviously in drinking bars, where chatting was welcome xD)

Of the districts the ones that seem to have changed a ton definitely Harajuku (Takeshita Dori) stood out most. Back in 2008 it felt grungy, fashion forward and a bit punk even. The fashion seems to have moved a few blocks back and it has been tamed a lot :/

Akiba seemed to have shifted from a very tech place with a bit of nerd merch to all out Genshin Paradise 😀
Though personally I'd claim the amount of rated R things have gone down…

My favourite city, Minato-ku, however seemed almost unchanged (maybe a bit more modern?)…

And beer and yakitori in Shimbashi are still great 😀

  1. No. 15 shows part of my commute that I walked for four years. Recognized it instantly, plus that building bordered in white light is a dead giveaway in every photo and movie. That area is right by the bay near Rainbow Bridge, so it’s depicted in a lot of films. I can often pick out my old apartment building in movies as a result.

  2. I miss 2005 Harajuku tbh. I loved hanging out in lolita by the station on sundays.
Now most of my favorite stores are closed or locations are consolidated and the vibe has changed.
