Hello, I’m Hank Orion, independent filmmaker. This is an unusual post I know but I'm new to Kyoto filmmaking scene… At the end of December, I’ll be shooting a new improvised, experimental film in Kyoto – just 1 day on location at the riverbank in Arashiyama. This is unpaid and purely experimental, but a great chance to collaborate, improvise, and create something unique.
The Concept:
Two strangers – a foreigner and a Japanese woman meet by chance on a riverbank. They spend one afternoon together, unable to leave, sharing food, gestures, silences, laughter, and grief.
Characters:
- Mark (Male, 25–35, foreigner in Kyoto) A traveler who came to Japan to surprise the woman he fell in love with online. When he arrives, he finds she has cheated on him. Heartbroken, embarrassed, and with his suitcase still at his side, he ends up at the riverbank.
- Aiko (Female, 20–30, Kyoto local) A traditional, reserved woman, raised with family expectations she has never questioned. She carries a charm that belonged to her late father, meant to be released into the river, but she cannot let go. She never imagined she’d spend an afternoon speaking to a foreigner.
📍 Location: Arashiyama, Kyoto (Kyoto local actors only please!)
📅 Shoot Date: End of December (1 day shoot only TBC)
📅 Deadline: End of October
🎥 Style: Fully improvised, experimental, naturalistic
