Booked a trip arriving in Tokyo the late afternoon of December 4th and departing afternoon of the 24th. I've been once before about 12 years ago (did mostly Tokyo, Hiroshima and Kyoto), but want to make sure she gets a great sampling rather than the semi-unplanned trip I did back in the day.
Rough itinerary so far:
Thu Dec 4: Tokyo (the Knot in Shinjuku, Dormy inn Shibuya, or other alternatives)
Fri Dec 5: Tokyo, do a Teamlabs, joypolis, diver city,cafes or other stuff that will be too busy on the weekend.
Sat Dec 6: Tokyo Meiji Shrine, Imperial Palace, other outdoor stuff. Samurai show or nightlife in Shibuya/Shinjuku
Sun Dec 7: Tokyo Day trip to Kamakura, Yokohama.
Mon Dec 8: Tokyo. Undecided, flex day or day trip to Hakone maybe.
Tue Dec 9: Head to and stay in Kanazawa. Leave in the AM, do the tourist stuff in Kanazawa. Stay in Ryokan if possible.
Wed Dec 10: Head to Takayama, stop at shirakawagob. Overnight in Takayama.
Thu Dec 11: Takayma. Explore, possibly to to Hida Folk village or Shinhotaka ropeway. Laundry break.
Fri Dec 12: Miyajima. Train to Hiroshima and ferry to Miyajima. Overnight in Miyajima.
Sat Dec 13: Hiroshima. Ferry to Hiroshima. Spend the day exploring (Peace museum for her. Maybe Mazada for me as I don't want to do the PM a second time, it's great, but not exactly a feel good trip). Okonomiyaki until I burst. Possible Hiroshima nightlife.
Sun Dec 14: Hiroshima More okonomiyaki. Possible day trip to Kurashiki or Matsuyama
Mon Dec 15: Hiroshima or overnight in Kurashiki
Tues Dec 16: Kinosaki onsen overnight in ryokan.
Wed Dec 17: Kyoto (either stay in Osaka and day trip or spend two nights in Kyoto)
Thu Dec 18: Kyoto or Kobe (day trips from Osaka, or 2nd night in Kyoto)
Fri: Dec 19: Osaka
Sat Dec 20: Osaka
Sun Dec 21: Osaka
Mon Dec 22: Tokyo. Train from Osaka to Tokyo.
Tues Dec 23: Tokyo. Tokyo Disney for the appeasement of my traveling companion.
This means I have a couple single nights each week with single stays, which is always a little annoying, but the weekends are in cities where there's some option for nightlife. Hits most of my big destinations while avoiding any crazy long trips that consume an entire day traveling (I'd like Beppu or Hui Ten Bosh, but they're too far).
Thoughts/suggestions?
