I am new to Japanese banking, and it has already surprised me in various ways in the past few months, but now it turns out I can't even use my card online. I have an SMBC Prestia Global Pass visa card, which certainly works flawlessly for offline transactions, but as soon as I try using it with Amazon, I get an almost immediate "card was not approved" rejection. Is it because it is expecting an actual credit card or is there some setting I am supposed to configure in the app?

I’m using it on Amazon just fine. The only problem I’ve run into (on other sites) is the inability to set up recurring payments on some sites, and it can’t be used for Apple Pay. The only thing I can think of is if you have Visa Secure set up correctly. You have to register it on the Global Pass members website: [https://faq.smbctb.co.jp/faq/show/283?site_domain=smbctben](https://faq.smbctb.co.jp/faq/show/283?site_domain=smbctben)
Okay, I had this problem, same card same site (I’m still not signed up on my Aeon card because they give you these symbols and only about 30 seconds to enter them and I can’t seem to get it right in time and my Prestia card works fine). You need to sign up for the Visa Secure (formerly Verified by Visa) on the Prestia GLOBAL PASS Member’s Website. It is a HUGE PAIN IN THE ASS but so many shops here are going to it to fight credit card fraud.
Can you try and get SMBC Olive? I have that one and it works fine for online stuff.
