Hey there, this is a throwaway account to protect my privacy.
I am an English teacher in Japan (private school) on a yearly contract that ends in January 2026. I’ve worked here for 2 years. Going on labour in December 2025, so my maternity leave will start in November 2025 and ends in February 2026. Employer has told me they won't renew my contract. I merely told them I will be moving to my husband’s home in another prefecture during childcare. Question 1, they are not going to renew my contract but didn’t explicitly told me it’s because of my pregnancy but I felt that way, so is that legal? This way I won’t be getting any childcare allowances. They said I’m welcome to come back to work after a year or so. Question 2, I believe I’m entitled to maternity allowance for the entire 98 days through early February 2025, but my employer said I’ll only be getting until my contract ends, which is December 2025. From what I read in this link, I believe I will be eligible for the maternity allowance since I’ve worked for more than a year, and I’m on maternity leave before my contract ends. What should I do going forward? Anyone with similar experience, can you share what you’ve done?
