Hello everyone, I'm looking for feedback regarding a delayed luggage experience with an airline, specifically Japan Airlines (JAL). To clarify things, I live in Japan, in Fukuoka. Here is my case:
I recently took a flight from New York to Fukuoka, with a layover at Haneda. The first leg of the flight (NY to Haneda) was a JAL flight operated by American Airlines, and the second leg (Haneda to Fukuoka) was a JAL flight operated by JAL.
When I arrived at Haneda, I discovered that my luggage didn’t make it and learned that it had stayed in New York. I was told it would be delivered to my home three days later. Since it was my flight home, I didn’t need to buy anything and simply waited for my bag at home.
When it finally arrived, three days later as scheduled, I noticed it was damaged beyond repair and a few items inside were broken (including a bottle of wine).
JAL's customer service has agreed to reimburse the value of my luggage, minus a depreciation due to its age, but the exact price still needs to be determined. As an apology, JAL has offered me an extra 10,000 yen.
Dear Redditors, this is where I need your opinion. What do you think of this offer? Is it a fair amount? I can’t compare it since this is my first experience. How much did you receive for a similar situation? Please share your stories, whether with JAL or any other Japanese airlines. Thank you!
