Let me introduce Japan’s “Children’s Centers” — 日本の児童センターを紹介するよ♪

Today, I went to a Children’s Center (児童センター) run by my city — and I think this kind of place might be something quite unique to Japan.

They’re free, open public spaces where kids can just come and play.
There’s a sign-in sheet at the entrance, but after that, it’s totally free play. Toddlers, elementary schoolers, even middle schoolers drop by.
Staff only step in if there’s danger or a fight — otherwise, it’s completely child-led and relaxed.

The city also hosts events like clothing swap days.
Parents bring clothes their kids outgrew, exchange them for tickets, and then trade those tickets for other families’ donated clothes.
It’s not about charity — it’s community recycling at its best.
Since we started joining, my son’s been wearing mostly secondhand clothes (except for underwear and shoes 😅), and it’s been such a help.

And then today…
I borrowed a craft set and colored pencils from the center, made little Halloween wall decoration, and donated it back for the staff to display. 🎃
