How does Lost and Found works in TOKYO. Need people’s honest and thorough experience and opinion.

I've noticed a lot of things being dropped by people or forgetting them while getting out of the train. Within 1 month i have handed over 5 items here and there to the train employee. I wonder how the person actually found their lost possession since there are multiple scenario which can take place.

1. The item was lost at Tozai line T18. I found it inside the train at T09, but since my end station was T04 how would the person who lost his possession would find out where his item is currently.

2. The item was lost at Tozai line T09 but the person doesn't remember where he/she lost it because he/she didn't realised since they changed it to JR line.

There are a lot of scenarios which i can think of but i feel these two are the major ones'. I want to know how it works here and if someone has experience in finding their possession how was the experience and what did the train station staff did.
