I’ve been living in Japan for a bit, and one thing that always bugs me is how expensive it is to send money to family or accounts overseas. Banks knock you with conversion markups, fees, and sometimes waiting days for the transfer to go through.
I’ve used Wise before, which works in many cases, but not all routes are ideal. Recently I heard about Ria Money Transfer, supposed to be good for certain corridors where others struggle. I’m curious whether it’s a legit option for people living here.
Has anyone in this community used Ria (or a similar service) while residing in Japan? Did it work smoothly, for example, sending to the U.S. or Southeast Asia? What’s your go-to method now when banks or Wise start getting too expensive?
Would love to hear what you guys use (and trust) for moving money abroad while based in Japan.
