Advice on Okinawa islands: Ishigaki or Zamami (or both)?

Hi everyone!

I’ll be traveling around Japan for about a month, and I really want to spend part of the trip exploring Okinawa. I’ve been reading up on the islands and I’m torn between Ishigaki and Zamami.

From what I understand, Ishigaki seems great for exploring nearby Yaeyama islands (like Taketomi or Iriomote), while Zamami looks quieter and perfect for beaches and snorkeling closer to the main island.

I’m wondering:

• Which island would you recommend for a first-time visitor?
• Is it realistic to visit both during one trip, or would that be too much travel?
• How many days would you suggest staying on each of the islands?
• Any accommodation or area tips (I prefer scenic spots and relaxed atmospheres, not big resorts)?
