Number of seniors working part-time in there spare time doubled. Some even in their 90s. Reason why they are working.


According to the online part-time job placement service Timee, the number of people aged 60 and over working finding work through the service reached 308,000 as of April 2025. 1.9 times higher than the previous year. The oldest person was 90 years old.

Popular occupations include light labor, food and beverage, and hotels. The most common reasons for working are "easy access," "making use of free time," and "maintaining health," with around 40% wanting to work as long as they can. Many reported that work provided a refreshing change of pace and a sense of contributing to others.

Some seniors said they enjoyed new experiences, such as working at a convenience store for the first time or building friendships with foreign trainees. At the same time, many found it difficult to secure jobs that matched their preferences. Around 30% of businesses that hired seniors through Timee said they would like to employ them on a long-term basis.
