A short video from last week’s Shamenchi Odori in Yase

What I love about Kyoto (among other things) is that you can see a random poster or talk to an old lady at a diner, and learn about some fascinating tradition or ritual that otherwise completely flies under the radar despite the number of tourists in the city. Like, if a friend of a friend didn't have a rice paddy in the area, I would've missed the whole affair.

And just in case, I'm not saying that people's traditions' main value or purpose is being an attraction for outsiders, just that for all of the advertisement Jidai Matsuri and the like receive, there is a whole world mainly passed by attention. (Granted, wherever I go I'm preceded by NHK crews, but maybe one day I can venture where even they don't go).

(Any tips about hidden gems within a day trip distance greatly appreciated).
