Is it difficult to change from a student visa to a long-term resident visa?

I'm ethnically Japanese (third generation, Sansei) and currently living in Japan on a student visa. I want to continue living here long-term.

Has anyone here successfully changed their status from a student visa to the long-term resident visa for people of Japanese descent? I'd really appreciate it if you could share your experience or give me any advice.
