Tax return about gift tax

My dad has been sending me money in installments as a gift, the next one will be the sixth times, for the purpose of purchasing a house.
The total amount will be 1650万円.
When I do 確定申告 for tax return, is it compulsory to report this money?
I heard that 贈与税 gift tax will be deducted, if yes how much is it? and just wondering if there’s way to avoid it, or whether I should ask my dad to send the next installment money to my brother instead

  1. What’s the schedule of these “installments”?

Is your dad or his assets in Japan? Are you even liable for gift tax in Japan? This depends on your SOR and how long you’ve been a resident.

  2. I think people need to know your visa status, or, spouse etc.

I have no idea about tax residency as I was one long ago and forget what the rules are.

But there are are rules to get money tax free for a house and to get early inheritance. The early inheritance is t tax free, but the money is deferred and if you cross the limit is only taxed at 20%. Then when you get your inheritance your real rate is worked and you pay/get back the difference.

I will see if I can find the link to the thing online I used. Made it very easy to understand.

I will comment again in 10-20 minutes.

  3. Found the link. This is only needed if you’re a tax resident. As I said in my other post, you have to say what type of visa you have, spouse, PR, etc.

You can always print it out and go to your local tax office. They are super helpful.

Even though it states it I want to point out that the house has to be purchased by March 15 of next year to use this credit since you already have the money. I am not sure, but I think they will use the date you transfer the money to the developer/seller. Then you submit the dead a few months later.

The house credit is very important as it’s actually tax free.
