LDP chief Takaichi asks Japan Innovation Party head to form coalition

  1. The Innovation Party has, from what I gather, existed for the specific purpose of taking power from the LDP. I guess there have been more surprising changes to a political party’s basic mission, but Takaichi maybe shouldn’t hold her breath.

Or maybe that’s all just wishful thinking on my part, because the prospect of her becoming PM just kind of worries me, and I would prefer to have a more centrist figure in charge.

  2. Hyogo Prefecture corruption case already dealt a huge blow to Ishin as a whole. If this for some weird reason goes through it’ll definitely cause Ishin to collapse considering Ishin was literally born to oppose the LDP. So, I don’t think it’ll really happen, but there’s a non-zero chance

  3. Back in 2024, did Ishin’s Baba get a little too cozy with Kishida’s LDP about the political funding law revision. As a result, Ishin took a beating in the Lower House election and Baba had to resign and Yoshimura got the job.

Getting too close to the LDP is not a good idea. Komeito was the only one to pull it off as their voting base is basically a cult. Voter with anything else than a cult-hive mind may decide that if a party gets too close with the LDP it’s time to shop for another political outlet.

In addition to a series of scandals of their own and considering the way Ishin bets the farm again and again with World Expos, IR Resorts and Back-up Capitals makes them just look like an LDP-version with a thick Kansai-ben accent.

At a national level, Ishin already peaked out and retreated back to their Osaka / Kansai home-turf. Even there, they also stagnated at the last election.

The above makes both the LDP and Ishin look more desperate than anything else. They may well end up stumbling both altogether. Birds of the same feather, hence no big loss…
