
On the 12th, Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward issued a 30-day suspension order to 22 rooms belonging to 12 businesses for failing to submit regular reports as required by the new private lodging law (Residential Accommodation Business Act) and for not complying with an order to make improvements. According to the ward, this is the first suspension order issued to a private lodging business in Tokyo.
According to the ward, Shinjuku Ward has highest number of private lodging in the country at 3,272 facilities as counted by public health center . On the other hand, in 2024, there were 561 complaints from neighbors about littering, noise, and cigarette butts, a significant increase from 70 in fiscal 2021. Public health centers provide guidance from time to time, but have now decided to take strict measures as they fear that this could lead to a deterioration of living conditions.
