By some miracle, Shigeharu was actually open during the final 4 days of my trip.
The concierge at Hotel the Mitsui reached out on my behalf earlier in the week and confirmed they’d be opening on the 17th.
I was actually in Osaka this morning but took 3 trains to arrive back in Kyoto this morning around 8 am. There was one other gentleman waiting outside and we were both let in around 8:15.
As a day early birthday present to myself, picked up a gyuto and nakiri, engraved with my name, and a shotoh engraved with my wife’s name.
He was super kind and understanding with my near non-existent Japanese, but enough common English words and Apple Live Translation got me through! Knives are all beautiful and shop display is very cool; so glad I got to experience this and bring these handcrafted knives back home with me.
Now to cool down in the AC for a bit cause it’s toasty today lol

congratulations on your beautiful purchases!
I was wondering are those allowed to bring home on airplane?
Congrats! I actually dropped by last Friday but no luck and now unfortunately I’ve left Kyoto a few days ago…. 🙁
This is where I bought my knives in 2019. Still didn’t use them… lol
