Best budget tips for mobile data + phone plans in Japan (moving to Tokyo soon)

Hi everyone,

I’m moving to Tokyo soon and I’ll be staying for about a year. I’m currently researching mobile data and phone plans in Japan, and I’d really like to know the best hacks or strategies to pay as little as possible while still having a reliable connection.

I don’t need anything fancy — just a Japanese number and enough data for daily use (Google Maps, messaging, social media, etc.).

I’ve seen options like Rakuten Mobile, UQ, and LINEMO, but it’s a bit overwhelming with all the fees, contracts, and data limits.

What do you recommend for someone new to Japan who just wants a cheap, flexible plan without hidden costs or long commitments?
