mercari id verification scam?

Hi there

I just signed up for Mercari – I had to do it on browser as my App Store is not set to Japan.
I tried to buy an item and it said my account is suspended (or words to that effect).
I inquired about it through the web form and was told I need to complete an ID verification.
I’m not going to do this but I saw some information on the Mercari site that this is a common phishing scam.

I’m wondering if this is a scam or legit Mercari and they’re just being dodgy. I asked my friend who uses Mercari to send me a link to the website they use and it was the same as the one I used. Also when I went on what I believe was their official website to inquire, they asked me to include an ID verification, so maybe this is just par for the course for them?

Anyway I have removed my payment details (and am going to my bank today) but I can’t delete my registered address or phone number without entering a new one and I’m not sure whether to just close the account? I would inquire via Mercari but I’m now concerned I might be accessing a sophisticated fake website.
