How do you do, fellow Redditors!
I'm currently on a long Japan trip with my kids, and we will be in Hokkaido, with a car, starting on October 25th for three days. We will be based out of Jozankei.
I am aware of the n-koshou forecast, and know roughly what websites are saying about what will look good right now, but I'd love to get specific recommendations / sanity checks from actual human beings with on the ground knowledge. Particularly taking into account not just what colors look best right now, but also what's reasonable (1-2 hour hike max probably?) with kids that still gets a good view, or even a hidden gem I'd never think to look for.
Some current ideas:
Like Shikotsu area on the first day, walk around the lake, Mt Tarumae view, maybe anything else in that area?
Big loop day two hitting Furano, Biei, Shirahige Falls, the central area…? I'm a little less clear if that's still optimal viewing right now or possibly getting late in the season. I'm a little nervous that's maybe too long in the car for the kids to be worth it from Jozankei. Anyone want to weigh in or have alternatives?
Big loop day three hitting Toya, Noboribetsu, the southern area. That still looks like prime viewing and isn't quite as far from Jozankei.
Ultimately the number one thing I am looking for is gorgeous scenery with fall colors, whether it's a viewpoint or a hike, whether it's pure nature or contains a temple, city, etc. I'm open to being quite flexible on everything else.
Thanks for reading all this and I appreciate anyone who's willing to weigh in! Seriously, thank you so much – it's been tricky planning all of this in an unfamiliar country from long distance, and I appreciate any and all thoughts on the best possible trip!!
