Should I get a University Degree for Art and Game design before I try move back to Japan?

Context – I lived in Japan over a year ago studying at a language school. My goal while I was there was to achieve N2 and get into an arts college to study Art and Game design. Some events happened, and unfortunately, I didn't have enough money continue my language school, didn't end up passing N2, and couldn't apply for a college there.

I loved living there and I want to move back for work one day. I know that a prerequisite there is to have at least a Bachelors degree for the working visa, which I don't currently have. Now that I've moved back to my country I'm a bit stuck on direction. Here, like many western countries, having a degree to work in arts and especially game design is not necessary, but sometimes not even helpful. There is no guarantee that with a degree my resume would look any better than people who have self studied and likely already have years more hands-on experience. But, as I mentioned I want to try move back and try at least to live in Japan again one day.

I was wondering if anyone here had any advice about whether its necessary for me to get that degree if I want to work in that felid in Japan one day. I know in Japan its more common to not have a Bachelor, but more like a diploma/certificate from a vocational school (similar to a course I could do here in Australia we call TAFE courses). Because of that I'm considering just getting a diploma or certificate, to at least have some level of qualification, but scared I'll make the wrong decision and it would prevent me from going back to Japan again.

I know that was a lot so..

TLDR – Is it worth it to get a University degree to work in Art and Game design in Japan or just try via work experience and get a minor qualification instead.

Thanks for anyone that read that whole thing, this is my first time posting on reddit so I hope it wasn't horrible to read. Would really appreciate the advice right now.

Edit: omg this has been so helpful and reassuring and I'm so glad I made this post. Thanks for your comments I wasn't expecting people to respond so soon or to see people who have gone through what I am talking about :3
