Advanced restaurant ordering

Hello, I am going to Japan in about three weeks now. This will be my third time. I have been studying some Japanese the last few months but not alot of improvements. My goal for learning Japanese is to be able to speak the language more since I am planning to visit Japan alot in my life.

But there is one big reason I really want to understand more Japanese. And that is to make if feel less akward in Japanese restaurants. I see myself picking out restaurants based on how easy or how english friendly ordering is. But I would prefer being prepared for even no english menus or any english at all.

I know phrases like "futari desu" and "kore desu" but for me this is all just to basic. I am looking for some more in depth phrases and manners I can use.

So can someone recommend me a video or a game or a site where I can practise my phrases for ordering in Japan?

  1. What’s advanced to you? To me xxx o kudasai, xxx o moraemasen ka?, and maybe like kaikei shitai desu is enough to eat basically anywhere.

  2. Not especially advanced, but…

    2人です。(Table for) two (please). {You said you know this one, but they will often ask 何名様ですか?(Nan mei sama desu ka?) rather than 何人ですか?、so just keep that in mind.}

    すみません、英語のメニューを持っていますか? Excuse me, but do you have an English menu? {Use this if you already see that the menu doesn’t have English wording on it any you really want an English menu and you think that it’s a type of restaurant that may have one.}

    (これ)を一つお願いします。 One of these {thing pointed to on the menu, or replace これ with the name of the item}, please.

    (これ)を一つと(それ)を2つお願いします。One of these and two of those, please.

    ああ、以上です。I think that will be so for now. {When finished ordering.}

    ああ、大丈夫です。Oh, no thanks. {When refusing an offer.}

    ありがとうございます。 Thank you. {It’s just polite to thank people.}

    お代わり、お願いします。Could I get a refill / second serving? {While raising up your empty glass, etc.}

    とても美味しかったです。 That was really delicious!

    すみません、どこで払いますか? Excuse me, where do I pay? {When you don’t think you pay at the table.}

    お会計、お願いします。I’m ready for the bill, please. {When paying at the table.}

    クレジットカードを使ってもいいですか? May I use a credit card? / Do you accept credit cards?
