Ren Narita’s character regression is proof New Japan booking isn’t what it used to be as far as long-term visions

I wholeheartedly believe that watching post match comments is so important, because it paints a big picture and shows off NJPW wrestlers in a way you wouldn't otherwise see, since promos are not the focus at all. That said, Ren's been done dirty ever since he turned heel 2 years ago character wise. Why – because he no longer cuts interesting promos, but he used to. Unfortunately, you didn't know that most likely.

During the first few shows post heel turn on Shota, Narita was cutting almost Jake The Snake-esque promos. He was supremely calm with a soothing voice, he smirked a lot, and he began talking goth-y while also maintaining charisma. When Shota attacked him one time, backstage he says "what was that, I thought we'd settle our beef in the ring?", despite being jumped in the aforementioned ring lol. Ren was cutting good promos, mixing charm with malice.

Then, the company said fuck that, and basically made him a heavyweight SHO… who is a Junior EVIL, aka a ripoff of a ripoff. He started saying BAKA a whole bunch, he barely speaks now and if he does he just yells, he is kind of crazy all of a sudden and he laughs a whole lot, and he was now perpetually angry for some reason. In kayfabe, the argument could be made that whatever initiation ritual HOT did on him made him that way but guess what, this isn't the Attitude Era and that's way too hokey.

I have seen people say Ren has no charisma, but that isn't true. He showed genuine promise when he first went heel, but now he is a angry, unbothered, miserable midcarder. The vibe at first made it out like he was doing everything because he wanted to, like he calculated that joining HOT was just step one of some grand master plan. Now, he is just dude number 12 in a massive group, and doesn't look to be an important part of the upcoming WK at all.
