so i hear that box jellyfish are a bit of an issue, but then also i read a lot about netted beaches to prevent the issue. how much of a danger are they? and also regarding the nets – does that really hinder snorkeling? how deep do the nets allow you to go? are the reefs beyond the net?
edit: for some context, planning to go in july, and would definitely be purchasing a rash guard (already wear a long sleeved shirt whenever i go snorkeling because my skin is just so pale and susceptible to sunburn haha)

Hard to tell. I’ve never seen them but have been warned by lifeguards not to walk in the water outside of netted areas (probably due to stonefish rather than jellyfish). I’ve only swum in two netted areas and the deepest you could go was about 1.85 metres (my height).
There’s not much to see in the netted areas of you were snorkeling. Mostly sand. But I’ve swum (is that a word) over on tokishiki island which seems to have no nets and had no issues. It also has coral and fish to see.
Other people probably have more experience and can give a better answer. But having come from Australia, where we have fantastic beaches and no real issues (south of Cairns), Okinawa was a bit of a disappointment beach wise.
