Did you know there are over 100 photo galleries in Tokyo, showing exhibitions of all kinds — from large museums to small artist-run spaces?
Traditionally, most of them promote their shows through postcards you can find only in galleries.
When I first arrived in Japan, my Japanese was poor, and I often couldn’t tell what the postcard was about — whether it was photography, painting, or even where the gallery was located.
So I decided to make it easier for people like me and made a free iPhone app called Community, where I regularly update information about current and upcoming exhibitions, galleries, and events.
Right now the app covers 84 galleries, and by the end of the year it will include over 100. It has a live map and calendar, so you can plan your route and visit several shows in one day.
It’s completely free, and iPhone-only for now (Android is coming soon).
What I love most about Tokyo’s photography scene is how open it is — there’s almost no line between professionals and amateurs. You can meet well-known photographers at their own exhibitions, start a conversation, and sometimes even become friends.
If you love photography or plan to visit Tokyo, I really recommend exploring a few small galleries — it’s an unforgettable experience.
Just search “Community Japan” in the App Store or press here
