NHI and hanko question

We will be moving in January, however, my husband will be returning to tie up loose ends February to March. We are a dual income household and we use my employer-sponsored health plan. When I resign, we will have about 6 weeks of continued coverage on my plan.

How long does it take for NHI to become effective?

My husband will need temporary coverage while he's back in the states, and if anyone has recommendations for that, we are all ears, but he will probably use his employer's option and use my resignation and overseas move as QLE to enroll outside of open season.

Another question we had: does he have to unenroll/update NHI when he gets US coverage? Or does that only apply to having alternative health insurance in Japan?

I was reading about needing hankos for various transactions. Is it possible to get these made before arriving in Japan? If so, any great experiences or advice? Thanks so much.
