Moving to Japan for my career as a Product Manager: Pre-requisites, Work Culture, and Tips

I'm a Malaysian Product Manager currently working for a US-based fintech firm, and I've been thinking of taking my career to Japan. I have experience in the fintech space, but I'm trying to get a realistic picture of what's involved, especially for someone in a specialized role and with my background.

I'd love to hear from anyone who has made a similar move, especially those in tech, finance, or product-focused roles.

Here are my main questions:

  1. Language Barrier & Japanese Proficiency
  • I currently do not know Japanese but am committed to learning.
  • For high-skilled roles (like Product Manager), is it essential to have passed JLPT N2 or N1 before applying/moving? Or are there enough international or tech-focused companies (especially in FinTech/IT) where English is the primary language, allowing me to learn Japanese while working?
  • Any advice on the best approach intensive Japanese study first, or jump in and learn on the job?
  1. Work Culture & Expectations
  • The reputation of long Japanese work hours is well-known. What are the realistic work hour expectations for foreigners in international/tech companies in major cities like Tokyo? Has the culture truly shifted?
  • How does the Japanese communication styles impact a Product Manager role, which often requires direct feedback and cross-functional leadership?
  1. Emerging Industries & FinTech Opportunities
  • Given my FinTech Product Manager background, are there specific companies or emerging industries in Japan that are actively hiring foreign talent in this space?
  • Besides IT/Tech (which seems like the most common answer), are there other high-growth sectors where my skills might be a good fit?
  1. General Tips & Prerequisites
  • What are the most common and effective tips for foreigners trying to find a high-skill job in Japan from overseas? (e.g., using specific recruiters, job boards like LinkedIn.)

Any and all advice, anecdotes, or recommendations are greatly appreciated! Thanks!
