Japan’s Komeito moving toward leaving coalition with LDP

Saito indicated that if the LDP does not fully meet Komeito's demands, the party would not support the LDP in the prime ministerial selection vote.

At the Oct. 9 meeting with local party executives, Saito referred to a slush fund scandal involving the LDP factions, saying, "There are newly occurring or newly revealed facts" in the money scandal. He added, "The public wants the LDP to show a firm stance on this issue, which is at the root of political distrust." He was apparently implying to the fact that a policy secretary of Koichi Hagiuda, who was appointed executive acting secretary-general in the new LDP leadership, was found guilty of violating the Political Funds Control Act and received a summary order to pay a fine in August.
