Views on mental health/medication?

So I was meeting with some friends I met at work (this is Tokyo) and we came across the topic of a tv show rn (romantic’s anonymous lol). I haven’t been in Japan for long so they don’t know this about me and it’s nothing something I share but it’s not smth I’m ashamed of either but I have ocd + panic disorder.

Basically they were talking about about how there’s nothing wrong with having an illness and another one of them was like “but it’s pretty weird if they have to take medication or get therapy” and they all agreed but I kinda like brushed it off? Maybe it was naive of me to think but I understand that Japan still has conservative views but I thought they were becoming more progressive; I’m half Korean and half Japanese, so I always felt like the levels of “conservativeness” in cultures were pretty identical (this is just my opinion) so I was kinda surprised by the views by ppl my age (we’re all mid twenties).

Basically, would you say this is representative of a lot of ppl in my gen? I understand older ppl wouldn’t understand, like my gramma still doesn’t know and I even lived with her for a while here.
