  1. I bought the a6000 and was frustrated by the Japanese menu. While my Japanese is ok, it wasn’t good enough for a novice with a complex camera. I came across a YT video that showed me how to put English on it.

So like the other commenter, please share your success. You can really help someone out.

  2. Can you give us more insights, such as which camera model/ firmware version were you able to unlock? Also after unlocking, can we just use more latest firmware from Sony website without issue, that is can we retain the unlocked English language or need to re-unlock again?

  3. Make a YouTube video if possible and link it as even I am considering buying my next mirrorless Sony at one of the flagship Sony camera stores during my visit to Japan. Which Sony location did you buys yours at? Also was it at discount or tax-free?

  4. From what I remember when I bought mine you just need to clone a GitHub repo and run the app

  5. This is a pretty known fact, that Sony’s cameras sold in Japan are locked in Japanese language. A quick search in Google shows this all over the place. So people should really be careful and search beforehand what they’re buying. Or at the least ask at the employee when buying.

  6. I went to the Sony store to buy a Sony FX6, and the person told me that they would not sell it to me because I was going to take it back to US. And he told me it didn’t matter anyway because the menu could not be converted to English. I immediately switch the camera over to English, he assumed I didn’t know enough Japanese to get through the menu. When I showed it to him, that’s when he told me that he wouldn’t sell it to me anyway because of Customs.

So I left there and went to Yodobashi where they sold me the camera and switched it to English FOR ME without any fuss.

Later one of the associates at Yodobashi told me that it was Sony corporate policy to not sell cameras that will be used outside of 日本 so that they don’t get used to undercut American pricing.
