Hi everyone,
My partner and I will be spending two weeks in Japan. We’re doing five days in Tokyo at the beginning and another five days at the end, and we’d like to spend the four days in the middle exploring a smaller, more rural area.
We’ve already visited Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, and Koyasan on our first trip, so this time we’re not looking for big cities or major temples again. We’re not “nature people” either – the goal is mostly to enjoy a quieter atmosphere, smaller towns, and a different pace compared to Tokyo.
Here’s the plan we’re considering:
Thu 20/11 – Takayama
Arrival from Tokyo, stroll around the old town, stay in Takayama.
Fri 21/11 – Okuhida
Bus from Takayama to Okuhida. Stay in a ryokan with a private onsen (e.g., Mozumo / Yukimurasaki / Hotaka).
Sat 22/11 – Takayama
Back to Takayama for the day and night.
Sun 23/11 – Okuhida day trip
Bus to Shinhotaka Ropeway, enjoy the mountain views, then back to Takayama for the night.
Mon 24/11 – Takayama
Morning market and train back to Tokyo.
We’re mostly looking for a quiet, charming atmosphere, good food, and a bit of relaxation — nothing too physically demanding.
For those who’ve been:
- Does this itinerary make sense?
- Is it a good way to experience a more “rural Japan” vibe without doing long hikes or complicated travel?
- Any tips or things you would adjust?
Thanks a lot for your feedback!
