Wanted to write down a couple of learnings for others, some will be obvious and others may not be but this way we all learn from my adventures 😀
- The Shinkansen stops in Kagoshimachuo station, this is not the same as Kagoshima station and is closer to the center of town
- The town is pretty small so you could probably walk everywhere if you wanted
- Suica and other IC cards don't work for everything around and south of Kagoshima
- There is a day pass for within Kagoshima that has savings on some attractions. E.g., the Aquarium saves 400 yen
- There is a local IC card but it's not really worth it
- Credit Cards do work for all trains south until Ibusuki, buses, trams, the ferry to Sakurajima, and the bus to the airport
- The trains from Kagoshimachuo to Ibusuki sometimes have the CC terminal hidden inside of waiting buildings
- Trains south of Ibusuki require you pay the conductor or pre-pay ahead of time at a station (it's the older system that was wider spread)
- The bike shop right off the ferry in Sakurajima rents e-bikes but they rent out fast, the hotel rentals are the most expensive

Thank you, always nice to read about Kagoshima. I was also surprised when my IC card wasn’t accepted at the tram. These small quirky things are part of the charm of this area I’d say 🙂
