Hey everyone,
I’m a Spanish guy currently living in Tokyo with my Japanese girlfriend. We’ve been together for quite a while, and I’m here on a Working Holiday Visa that expires on February 2026.
We’re planning to get married, but I’ve heard that Spaniards on a WHV can’t change their visa type inside Japan anymore (for example, switching to a Spouse or Work Visa).
Apparently, you need to go back to your home country and apply from there. I’m not sure if that’s actually true, so I’m hoping someone here has up-to-date info or experience.
My main questions:
• If we get married before my WHV expires, can I apply in Japan for a Spouse Visa (在留資格変更許可申請)?
• Or do I have to go back to Spain and apply through the Japanese embassy there?
• Has anyone managed to do this recently? (like, post-2023/2024 changes)
• How long did the process take, and did Immigration let you stay while waiting?
Also, if anyone has gone through the marriage procedure in Tokyo as a Spanish citizen, I’d love to know what documents you needed and how long city hall took to process everything (certificate of no impediment, translations, apostille, etc.).
Some context:
• Nationality: Spanish
• Location: Tokyo
• Visa: Working Holiday (expires Feb, 2026)
• Goal: Marry and stay in Japan with my partner under a Spouse status
I’ve read mixed things online, some say the rule changed and WHV holders can’t change status anymore, while others say it’s still possible if you’re married and apply before your visa expires. So I’m just trying to confirm what’s actually true.
If anyone has gone through this or knows where to find official info (Immigration website, embassy, etc.), I’d really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!
